Shenzhou 13 taikonauts conduct first spacewalk Two Chinese taikonauts ventured outside of China's space station on Sunday (Nov. 7) to perform the first extravehicular activity (EVA) of the Shenzhou 13 mission. Zhai Zhigang and Wang Yaping began the spacewalk at 6:51 p.m. Beijing time (5:51 a.m. EST or 1051 GMT) with Zhai opening the hatch of the Tianhe core module. The six-and-a-half-hour excursion was completed at 1:01 a.m. Beijing time on Nov. 8 (12:01 p.m. EST or 1701 GMT on Nov. 7). During the spacewalk, Zhai and Wang added a grapple fixture and adapter to the station's robotic arm. Wang also tested working in China's upgraded Feitian spacesuit while mounted on the end of the arm. The EVA marks the first time that a Chinese woman, Wang, has walked in space. The outing is Zhai's second, having conducted China's first spacewalk during the Shenzhou 7 mission 13 years ago.
